RE: Chair Recommendation

P.S. I just looked at Coleman.com, the chairs are $39.99 online, Captain's Chair, without side table. They also come with side table.
DH is 6'3" and over 300 lbs and says they are very comfy.

RE: Chair Recommendation

I have camp chairs by Coleman. The seats are high enough that you can sit and stand without fighting your way into and out of the chair. The seats are wide and the chair is strong and well-built. They were on sale at a Coleman outlet store for $20.00.

RE: Am I missing something???

I would not have called AC over a neighbor's pet dog running off leash. I would have put my dogs in the house and walked the loose dog back home where I would say "Oh my gosh, your dog was loose and I didn't want him to get lost or hit by a car, so I brought him home. Here he is."
My dogs get lose once in a while and run through the neighborhood like Sherman through Gerogia. My neighbors help me catch them.

RE: Roots of your RV addiction??

Oh gosh, Mom and Dad started us out in one of those big canvas tents about 50 years ago. Then, we got a a used, beat-up old pop-up that they carefully repaired and took it all over the country, pulling it with an old Chevy and then a Cadillac. Then we got a TT with A/C and a bathroom! Honestly, that was the worst. I never wanted to go outside in the heat anymore and part of the fun of camping was going to the showers and walking back to the campsite in our jammies. Being the oldest, I only made a few trips in the TT before college. Mom and Dad continued camping even after all the kids were out of the house. They were white water rafting at 65 and spent 3 months in Alaska a few years later. They just gave my brother the last TT and he takes his crew of 5 camping a few times a year. I bought a MH and introduced DH to RVing. We are in need of one more RV that Mom and Dad can handle so that we can all go camping together. I guess it really started when we pitched the tent in the backyard and camped out to rehearse before we packed up. What fun!!!

RE: Do you smoke in your RV

We smoke in the MH. We cook in the MH, even fried foods. Our pets are in the MH and we don't always take off our shoes when we enter. We use it the way we want to now and not for a possible re-sale sometime in the unforseen future.

RE: I do not know if i can go camping after my wife passed away

Dear Friend, it hurts my heart to read of the loss of your darling wife. My eyes are puddling with tears in symapthy for you and now we are mourning her together. This is the greatest loss of all and it is a loss personal and unique to you and you alone. No one can truly understand your pain, but many have experienced their own personal and unique losses. When you hear that horrible expression "time heals all wounds", I know you want to scream. It sounds so trite. But, it is true. This I promise to you.
Grieving is normal and healthy. A few sessions with a recommended therapist can help you in ways you can not imagine now. Ask your family doctor for a referance.
As far as camping; take everything one baby-step at a time. This is not a decision you have to make now,is it? No, it can wait. So, let this one just sit on the shelf for later. Right now it is going to be hard enough to live in the house, walk in the yard, go get the mail and do shopping without being reminded of her everywhere and feeling sad and lonely.
For now, surround yourself with friends and family and let your grief takes its course. From past experiences, the first year where you experience the first holidays, birthdays, anniversaries is horrible. The next year, you can't believe 2 years has passed because it seems like just yesterday but you will find that you have been getting on with life without even meaning to. By the 3rd year, you will be able to leave your unbearable grief behind and replace it with memories that fill you with only love again.
If I ever see a single camper again, I am going to make an extra effort to befriend them. I always assumed they were alone because they wanted peace and quiet. Now, I will remember you when I see them and invite them for coffee or cocktails or soda at the fire.
Thank you for your post. It opened my eyes.
May God be with you.

RE: Electrical service for large class A...220 or 110?

I know nothing about electricity, it scares me. But I do know that we plugged into a 220 (after an oil field friend made some modifications) and fried 3 televisions, 3 stereos, the micro/convection oven and the cargo freezer. It was a very expensive lesson.
Just a thought.

RE: First timer mistakes.

Get yourself a voltage meter and keep it plugged into a kichen outlet so you can always see it. I use it as a guide when flipping switches on everything.
Helpful hint: Watts divided by 120 = amps.
A 1,400 watt toaster oven will eat 12 of your 30 amps.
I know nothing about electricity as you can probably tell, but these 2 tidbits have helped me. I haven't tripped anything in a long time.

RE: Need Advice-Camping in freezing weather

Here is one I didn't think of while camping in freezing temps. We had a water filter on the fresh water intake hose. It froze. So did the water trapped in the hose above the filter. Lesson learned.

RE: What will jumpstart the baby boomers into buying again.

RV retirement resorts, the demarcation of an RV as a "home" and the ability to use capital gains from the sale of a stick house to purchase one on wheels. That is my answer.
Most BBrs have retired or are ready to retire, their children are grown and they have grandkids. They don't want to have to find another job to keep up the with house maintenance, rising insurance rates, rising property taxes and rising utility rates for a stick house that is now way too big for just 2 and is really not much more than rooms of furniture storage.
Plus, there needs to be a change in the design of RV's for just the retired folks who want to live in their RV. We do not need uncomfortable sofas that fold into uncomfortable beds, small dining tables with no space to walk around them and do not need to crane our necks to look at TV. We still need bath tubs and full sized showers, king beds, 4 burner stoves and deep sinks. We will need a storage facility for our "extras".
We need play yards for our pets, good parking for our vehicles, street lights and mail boxes.
Of course, this is just my humble opinion. I could be wrong.
Nice resorts, specifically designed for the needs and wants of the retired population will be a great solution for living on a retirement. Gym, pools, beautiful grounds a gated community and security for a monthly fee.
Insurance and property tax for our paid for stick house is $18K a year. Yard maintenance is $4K. House maintenance - it just depends on what we need to do each year. Hurricanes destroyed our privacy fence and fences are not covered under any insurance policies. Price - $100 per foot x 450 feet which does not include gates and uses the poles from the old fence.
Every time we write a check for maintenance and repairs, we wonder why we are still here. We can afford it, but the hassle takes more time, money and effort that is better used elsewhere.

RE: Is this logical?

We bought a DP. There was no consideration of a gas engine for us. DH says "pushing" is better than "pulling" and he understands diesel engines from his 30 years on ships and understands "push" versus "pull" from about 10 years on ocean going tugs. I had nothing to offer in that conversation. We bought ours to travel around the US and Canada and in the mountains, we just feel much safer with the jake brakes.
We bought a used but not abused high end model for around the same price as a new gasser.
If I were you, I would drive the gasser that suits you, then a DP that suits you and see if the extra outlay of money is worth it to YOU.

RE: motor home verses 5th wheel

As for the cockpit being part of the living area, the captains chairs rotate to enable them to be used as more seating and some steering wheels adjust so that you can put a top on the wheel as use it as a side table.
There are also mid-entry MH's to consider, and if the TV is not located above the windshield, you can drape off the cockpit and not have to use it for entry/exit or TV.
Shop, shop, shop.

RE: motor home verses 5th wheel

If what you want to do is to spend your time in exclusive resorts with tons of amenities that only allow MH's then I don't think you have any option but to trade your 5vr for a MH. Obviously, your 5vr is not the RV for you and in hindsight, you chose the wrong type of RV, no matter how much you like it. Not to worry, many of us have changed our minds about our RV selection after a while and traded up, down or sideways to get what we wanted.
You also say you are not sure you will like RVing in the long run. Well, you can always change your mind and sell the MH too. You are right, nothing is etched in stone, so to speak. Of course, every trade, sale, etc. will likely result in a net loss for you.
Good luck shopping and I hope you find the MH that is just right for you.

RE: Overnighting in Flying J??

Get some ear plugs and drive long enough and you won't hear a thing at the truck stop. When we do use a truck stop, it is because we are also going to spend about $400 there. I prefer to park closer to the trucks, because the drivers don't hang around drinking and talking to their dogs near my bedroom window. Maybe it is me, but they also seem to let their dogs pee on their own tires, unlike some of the RV'rs.

RE: Question about possible Class A purchase (Bounder)

You can repair a rubber roof and patch it up with eternabond. It is messy, but it works. You should seal around everything anyway. You can do this yourself.
Or a new roof. I was quoted $5K last year for a 42'MH. We went with them just patching it and we get it checked periodically. (Who sees the top? As long as it doesn't leak, what do you care?)
So, you need a whindshield. $1,000.00. $14,500 is still cheap! I have never heard of buying any vehicle with a broken windshield and then getting the insurance company to cover it, so I can't help you there.
It is where you can inspect it, drive it and look things over. Why bother with Craig's list? There is a reason you keep going back to it. Offer to pay for him to drive it to Ford and have the engine inspected. Go through all the "things" to see if it all works inside. It is 20 years old, it is not going to look like new paint ever again.
New paint job? Is it necessary? If so, talk to some of the folks here who have gone to Mexico and gotten great results.
I wouldn't pass this up without doing some footwork.
